The Horse People

........

The first time I saw all the "Win" pictures of Darlene and horses she had trained I knew I was entering a world I knew nothing about. Bonnie also had worked with horses on farms and at the tracks. Over the next few years I was to be introduced to a whole subculture of big-hearted people with tremendous sense of humor and a wonderful way of seeing the world.

Of course there was my roommate, Carole who had her own horse and trained for Dresage.

She also had me attending events like Jack Russel races and steeple chase events.

In short order Bonnie and Darlene had me going to the Training Center teaching me to muck stalls.

One spring and summer I spent every weekend with Lynne Root on a farm in Bourbon county as she prepared yearlings for the upcoming Keenland sales.

There was Joy Gilbert, a horse photographer.

And Sally Shu with the Senator.

We even got into the Red Mile trots with the concerts afterward.

The activity center was The Farm owned by the Wilkinson family and managed by Jack who was also a horse trainer.

Jan helped him train as well as training her own horse, Smoke for dressage.
